Online payment and e-commerce platform Paytm on Tuesday announced that their movie ticketing business has crossed gross merchandise value of Rs 400 crore. The service was launched in March last year, seeking to take over the market leader leader BookMyShow.

Within a year of launch Paytm has developed a supply chain of local theatres to revamp the traditional offline ticket booking systems. Apart from this, Paytm has also partnered with leading multiplexes like PVR, Inox, Carnival. Cinepolis and more.

Paytm's movie ticketing allows bookings across 3,500 screens in more than 550 cities, with more than 25 million tickets booked in 2016.

Speaking on the announcement, Renu Satti, Vice President – Paytm said, “ Initially, our focus was to tie up with national chains and city theaters for online booking at our platform. We have also enabled them with Paytm QR code based ticket booking at box office and at F&B counters. Subsequently, we have grown the ecosystem bringing in single screens and marquee regional theatres into our platform. It is encouraging to see the high traction amongst both consumers and theatres alike for the platform and new technology.”
